13 U.S. Companies Failing on Deforestation-Free Beef

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) recently released a report, “Cattle, Cleared Forests, and Climate Change: Scoring America’s Top Brands on Their Deforestation-Free Beef Commitments and Practices.” The publication highlights how beef production is the primary contributor to tropical deforestation worldwide, predominantly occurring in South America.

An Overlooked Water Resource

Carbon rich soil acts like a giant sponge that absorbs water during floods and provides it to plants in times of drought. An increase in organic matter (carbon) in the top six inches of soil increases its water holding capacity by approximately 27,000 gallons of water per acre.
