Celebrating Rural Women: The Backbone of Land, Water, Economic and Social Regeneration
As the world marks the International Day of Rural Women (October 15) and prepares to celebrate World Food Day tomorrow (October 16), two moments that remind us that there is no food, no water, and no climate stability without rural women. Regeneration International stands in solidarity with the women who nourish their communities, those whose labour, care, and wisdom sustain the earth’s living systems.
Across the world, rural women are the heart of food systems and raising families.
They are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, yet they remain the first line of defence against it. Having different roles as agro-pastoralists, crop farmers, and fisherwomen; custodians of the land, livestock, and water that hold our shared future.
Women, have for years hosted indigenous wisdoms that they’re skilfully handing down to their young ones. When rains fail, when soils dry, when communities falter, it is the rural woman who still finds a way to patiently nurture life, saving seeds, regenerating land, restoring water, and feeding families.
I write this not as an observer, but as a rural woman who stands on the shoulders of those who came before me. I carry in my genes, the strength of my grandmother, who raised me with quiet dignity and resilience, her hands always working the soil, her spirit unbroken by hardship. From her, I learned that resilience is not just survival, it is a form of leadership. This is one of my life’s most treasured privileges. And in all women, I see this, in every way.
However, despite their central role, rural women continue to face deep inequalities.
Globally, they make up around 40% of the agricultural workforce yet own less than 20% of the world’s land. They are often excluded from access to economic resources, markets, and decision-making, all socially constructed barriers too often disguised as “culture.”
Still, they rise.
They organize cooperatives, lead community adaptation, and teach their children, girls and boys alike, that care is strength and equality is essential for regeneration.
And as they do, they remind the world of a vital truth:
The intention is not to undermine men, but to illuminate the lived realities, struggles, and leadership of rural women, so that men and women can walk together in the shared work of making our world thrive.
Because regeneration, at its heart, is about balance, between people, between ecosystems, and between generations.
At Regeneration International, we stand in solidarity with all women farmers as seed keepers, pastoralists, crop growers, and water stewards who embody resilience, dignity, and leadership.
Happy International Day of The Rural Woman
