Northern European “4 per 1000” Regional Meeting – Helsinki

06/06/2023

Join the conference connecting real-world farming, policy, research, and business for healthy soils in Northern Europe

Connecting real-world farming, policy, research, and business with each other is vital if we are to transition towards healthy soils and productive, highly resilient agriculture. Join the first-ever Northern European regional meeting of the “4 per 1000” Initiative in Helsinki in June.

The purpose of the three-day meeting is to spark cooperation and knowledge exchange that enables us to achieve our shared objective of increasing soil carbon sequestration in order to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss, safeguard food production, and protect waters.

The meeting is targeted to stakeholders from the following countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Ireland, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Ukraine.

The conference takes place at Hilton Helsinki Kalastajantorppa, just a short tram ride from the city centre. Expect local and regeneratively farmed food, and ample opportunities to enjoy fresh, early-summer Nordic greenery – and perhaps a dip in the Baltic Sea.

The main financers of the meeting are the “Catch the Carbon” programme of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland, the Strategic Research Council of the Academy of Finland, and the “4 per 1000” Initiative. It is also sponsored by EIT Food and the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council.

The three-day event brings together colleagues from all over Northern Europe. It offers, among other things, 12 keynote speeches, 2 field trips, tens of posters, panel discussions, and countless opportunities to connect and gain new insights.

  • Healthy soils, linking climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as water protection and food security
  • Monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of soil carbon exchange and storage
  • Regional priority in Northern Europe: agricultural organic soil
