In January 2026 we took on seven acres of monoculture passionfruit on São Miguel in the Azores — herbicide under the vine rows, drip irrigation, prunings removed every season. In March, two storms two weeks apart destroyed almost the entire crop. We had already committed to converting it. The storms simply proved the point.
They are also shown what has not worked here: an orchard we replace five to ten percent of every year, coffee planted before it had shade, trees the goats stripped, and a crop that grossed €14,000 a year across seven acres — the number that reframes what a small farm’s economics really are.
Sixteen places. All instruction, meals, tools and airport transfers included. Participants leave with a complete design for their own land, eight assessed practical competencies, and a sixty-eight-step manual written as the conversion happens.
Malaca Farm Estate, Cabouco, Lagoa, São Miguel, Azores.
