Workshop – Forage & Forest: Tour a Third-Year Silvopasture

08/27/2021

Learn how trees can benefit your grazing herd.

Silvopasture — the thoughtful integration of forages, livestock, and trees on pasture — allows graziers to add shade for their herd, slow winter winds, fix nitrogen in the soil, and increase feed at critical times of the year. It also increases biodiversity and can create new sources of revenue.

Fiddle Creek Dairy began developing silvopasture systems on their farm in 2019. Working in partnership with an agroforestry consultant and a nonprofit, they’ve planted over 3,000 trees in their pasture to date. In January 2020, we hosted a workshop on the farm to discuss the beginning of this process.

Join us as we revisit Fiddle Creek’s silvopasture, now in its third year. Farmers Tim and Frances Crowhill Sauder will discuss the progress they’ve made, the lessons they’ve learned, and what lies ahead. After their presentation, we’ll tour the pasture then have lunch at the farm (meals are included with registration).
